When God Makes You Wait

When God Makes You Wait: Understanding Divine Delays in Your Life
Have you ever wondered why God sometimes seems silent when you need Him most? Why does it feel like He's making you wait when you're desperate for His intervention? The story of Lazarus in John 11 reveals a profound truth about God's love that challenges our understanding of divine timing.
The Shocking Reality: God's Love Includes Waiting
In John 11:1-6, we encounter a puzzling scenario. Lazarus, whom Jesus loved, was sick. His sisters Mary and Martha sent word to Jesus, simply saying, "Lord, behold, he whom you love is sick." Jesus' response seems contradictory to our expectations: "So when he heard that he was sick, he stayed two more days in the place where he was."
This wasn't because Jesus didn't care. The scripture explicitly states that Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. Yet because He loved them, He chose to wait.
Why Does God Make Us Wait When He Loves Us?
Our Expectations vs. God's Purpose
We often expect God to respond immediately to our needs because of our relationship with Him. We think that because we've served faithfully, attended church regularly, or maintained a prayer life, God should be at our "beck and call." But this thinking reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of our relationship with the Almighty.
God's delays aren't about punishment or lack of love. When Jesus said Lazarus's sickness was "not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it," He revealed the deeper purpose behind divine delays.
The Problem with Spiritual Entitlement
Too many believers have fallen into spiritual complacency, expecting God to move according to their timeline. We've become like spoiled children who demand immediate gratification from our Heavenly Father. This attitude challenges God's sovereignty and reveals our need for spiritual maturity.
What Is God Working Out During the Wait?
Breaking Religious Mindsets
Sometimes God's delays are designed to break us free from religious thinking that puts God in a box. Those teachings that suggest there are "15 steps to answered prayer" or that we haven't done enough to earn God's response need to be shattered. God wants relationship, not religious performance.
Moving from Complacency to Desperation
God may be waiting because He needs to move you from a place of comfortable Christianity to genuine desperation for Him. When all else fails - when friends can't help, when your own efforts fall short - that's when you discover God in a deeper way.
Learning God's Character Through Trials
You Can't Know God's Provision Without Experiencing Need
Consider this profound truth: You will never know God as your provider (Jehovah Jireh) until you experience genuine need. You'll never know Him as your healer (Jehovah Rapha) until you face illness. You cannot know Him as your peace (Jehovah Shalom) until you experience anxiety.
God allows us to experience the opposite of what we need so we can truly know Him in that specific area of our lives.
The Purpose of Divine Delays
God's timing serves multiple purposes:
- To develop your faith and character
- To break you free from spiritual complacency
- To help you experience His nature more fully *To ensure He receives glory from your situation
- To move you from one level of spiritual maturity to another
When Doubt Threatens Your Faith
Will You Still Believe Tomorrow?
The real test comes when Jesus doesn't show up on your timeline. Will you still call out to Him next week? Will you still believe when the delay stretches longer than expected? This is where doubt must die for faith to truly live.
Understanding Disappointment
Disappointment is simply the distance between your expectations and what God delivers. This doesn't make God less faithful or loving - it reveals areas where our expectations need to align with His perfect will and timing.
Don't Give Up During the Wait
God Remains Unchanged
God doesn't become less God because He hasn't met your need according to your timeline. He remains "the same yesterday, today, and forever." Your circumstances don't change His character or His love for you.
The Danger of Spiritual Entitlement
We often want God to change for us while we remain unchanged. We pray, "God, if you'll just do this one thing..." while planning to continue in the same patterns that created our need in the first place. God's delays often challenge us to "do different" - to change our approach, our heart, or our actions.
Life Application
This week, instead of demanding that God move according to your timeline, embrace the wait as an opportunity for spiritual growth. Recognize that His delays are not rejections but invitations to know Him more deeply.
Ask yourself these questions:
What am I learning about God's character during this waiting period? How is this delay challenging my spiritual complacency? What might God be trying to work out of my life before He provides what I'm asking for? Am I willing to change and "do different" rather than expecting God to change for me? Remember, God's love for you is so great that He's willing to let you wait in order to give you something better than immediate gratification - a deeper relationship with Him and a stronger faith that can withstand any storm. Don't give up. Don't quit believing. Your breakthrough may be just around the corner, and when it comes, you'll understand why the wait was necessary.
